Accept your emotions to improve your psychological health

Accept your emotions to improve your psychological health

Right now is a great opportunity to observe how you are handling disruption and uncertainty.  You may be experiencing a wide range of emotions; some you could label as negative.

What you have known is changing, and you are facing a ‘new normal’, whether you like it or not.

One of the best strategies you can do is face this reality, and accept your emotional response.

There is power in acceptance.

Acceptance is not giving in or giving up. It’s having the ability to face reality, and back yourself that you have the resources to handle it.

An interesting study from the University of Toronto investigated how accepting your negative emotions contributes to your psychological health.

The researchers found that:

‘People who accept negative emotions without judging or trying to change them are able to cope with their stress more successfully.’

and

‘Those who habitually accepted their emotions and thoughts experienced fewer negative emotions. And this led to better psychological health’.

How you think about your own negative emotional reactions is really important for your overall well-being. Add a touch of acceptance to the frustrations of today, and try it out for yourself.
